Unpacking the Ontario 2024 Working at Heights Training Enhancements Average Read Time - 5 min

The Ontario Working at Heights Training Program Standard is set to undergo significant updates effective April 1, 2024. These changes aim to enhance the safety and efficacy of the training programs, ensuring workers are well-equipped to handle the dangers associated with working at heights.

The updates include Introduction of additional learning outcomes such as:
• Focusing on the safe use of ladders, 
• Risks associated with skylights
• Identification and management of damaged equipment 

Additionally, the revised standards will mandate the inclusion of more comprehensive personal protective equipment training.

The course will follow the same Two-part module defined below:

Working at Heights Part 1 eLearning

The Working at Heights eLearning Basic Theory module is a foundational element of the updated training program, designed to provide workers with crucial theoretical knowledge on safe practices when working at heights. 

It covers:

• Legal rights and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act,
• Common hazards in the workplace, 
• The hierarchy of controls to manage these risks.

Working at Heights Part 2 Practical

The new and improved Working at Heights Practical module enhances the foundational knowledge gained in the theory module by providing hands-on experience with safety equipment and procedures. 

This includes: 

• The correct use of barriers and safety nets
• The application of personal fall protection gear
• The identification and utilization of secure anchor points
• The employment of work positioning systems and platforms
• Essential rescue planning processes to prepare workers for emergency situations
